At Portland Head

They left old England’s shore
A journey to endure
Abide with us, Lord God our guide
Across these oceans wide.

The Coromandel’s berth
The far side of the earth
From Sydney Town to Portland Head
These faithful souls were led.

A church built on a rise
God’s beacon for their lives
Surrounding farms where harvests grow
And Hawkesbury waters flow.

Those Sundays, long ago
We’d watch the river flow
And picnic on this hallowed ground
Old memories abound.

We heard of muffled oar
Of bodies rowed ashore
Up to the church and cemetery
To wait eternity.

And so this church remains
Its message still the same
Ebenezer, church of stone
No one need walk alone.

A church built on a rise
God’s beacon for their lives
Ebenezer, church of stone
No one need walk alone.
